STRONG EARNINGS: A good day for earnings pushed stocks higher. The Dow Jones industrial average, the Standard & Poor's 500 index and the Nasdaq composite rose for a third straight day.

The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index advanced Tuesday, led by companies that stand to benefit most from an upturn in the economy. That's a change from earlier in the year when investors favored lower-risk stocks with greater stability like health care companies, utilities and makers of consumer staples. All three major indexes - the Dow, the S & 500 and the Nasdaq composite - rose for a third straight day.

Companies that do well when the economy is improving led the market higher Tuesday after several of them notched strong earnings.

The stock market climbed Tuesday following strong earnings across a range of U.S. industries.
